India Closes Airspace to Pakistani Flights Until May 23: What It Means for Regional Aviation

In a significant development with potential geopolitical and aviation implications, India has officially closed its airspace to all Pakistani-operated or leased flights until May 23. The decision, announced through an aviation NOTAM (Notice to Airmen), applies to both civil and military aircraft belonging to Pakistan.

The move was first reported by India Today, citing government sources. The NOTAM clearly outlines that no aircraft registered to, operated by, or leased by Pakistan is permitted to fly over Indian airspace for the duration of the ban.

Why This Matters

Airspace closures between neighbouring countries are rare and typically reflect heightened diplomatic tensions or security considerations. The suspension can impact flight operations, airline schedules, fuel costs, and even passenger convenience—especially for long-haul flights that often rely on efficient routing through neighbouring airspaces.

For Pakistani carriers, this closure could lead to extended flight durations and detours, particularly for flights heading east or using Indian airspace as a corridor to Southeast Asia or beyond. For Indian authorities, it sends a strong signal amid ongoing regional developments.

What's Next?

While the NOTAM is set to expire on May 23, there’s always the possibility of extension or escalation depending on the situation between the two countries. It also puts international airlines on alert, especially those with codeshare agreements involving Pakistani routes or operations that cross Indian territory.

This airspace closure is not just about aviation—it’s a reflection of the broader diplomatic tone in South Asia. Travelers, airlines, and observers will be watching closely to see if this restriction ends peacefully or escalates further.

Rex Administrator Halts Sale of Four Active Aircraft

In an unexpected turn of events, Rex’s administrator has cancelled plans to sell four active aircraft, shedding light on the airline's ongoing challenges. This exclusive report from Australian Aviation reveals details surrounding the attempted sale and the future of these crucial regional planes.

Regional Express (Rex), one of Australia’s leading regional carriers, had listed four Saab 340B aircraft for sale. These planes, which regularly serviced key regional routes, remained operational despite Rex experiencing disruptions in services earlier this year due to shortages in parts and labour.

The four aircraft in question—registered as VH-RXE (pictured above), VH-ZLX, VH-ZJS, and VH-ZRH—were all advertised through global aviation firm C&L. However, after EY Australia took over as the airline’s administrator, the sales process was halted. All four aircraft have been flown multiple times in recent weeks, further emphasising their operational importance.

While the aircraft are now off the market, Rex's future remains uncertain as the airline navigates its current financial difficulties. With essential aircraft like the Saab 340Bs playing a critical role in regional connectivity, the decision to cancel the sale raises questions about the company’s long-term strategy.

Rex’s decision to retain these active planes may offer a glimpse of hope for regional passengers who rely on the carrier’s services. However, the airline’s broader challenges persist as it works through its administration process.

Cathay Pacific Grounds Airbus A350 Fleet for Comprehensive Engine Review

Cathay Pacific Reviews Entire Airbus A350 Fleet Following Engine Failure

Cathay Pacific has placed its entire Airbus A350 fleet under scrutiny following the failure of a critical component in the Rolls-Royce engines. The issue surfaced on September 2, during flight CX383 from Zurich (ZRH) to Hong Kong (HKG), forcing the aircraft to return to Hong Kong due to engine trouble. This marks the first occurrence of such an incident globally on the Airbus A350 model, prompting an in-depth review across the fleet.

Cathay Pacific's fleet of 48 A350 aircraft, consisting of 18 A350-1000s powered by Rolls-Royce Trent XWB-97 engines and 30 A350-900s equipped with Rolls-Royce Trent XWB-84 engines, is now undergoing comprehensive inspections. The investigation found that several aircraft required engine component replacements, with spare parts being sourced to begin repairs immediately.

One of the affected planes, an A350-1000 registered B-LXI, has been in service since February 2019 and had accumulated over 22,000 flight hours. Due to the ongoing maintenance, 24 round-trip flights have already been cancelled as of September 3.

Keith Brown, Cathay Pacific's engineering director, assured that the review is being handled meticulously. While the investigation is ongoing, the airline will continue to operate unaffected aircraft, ensuring safety remains the top priority. Aircraft requiring further technical attention will undergo additional repairs.

Cathay Pacific is working closely with the Hong Kong Civil Aviation Authority, Airbus, and Rolls-Royce to resolve the issue. Rolls-Royce has yet to respond publicly, while Airbus has referred inquiries to the airline and the engine manufacturer.

The incident has had immediate financial implications, with Rolls-Royce and Airbus seeing a dip in share prices. Rolls-Royce shares dropped by 3.9%, while Airbus shares fell by 1.9%. The A350, a key player in Cathay Pacific’s long-haul operations, competes with Boeing’s 787 Dreamliner and 777, showcasing advanced efficiency through composite materials. The resolution of this situation will be closely monitored by the aviation industry.

Cathay Pacific's swift response to the engine failure reflects the airline's commitment to safety and operational excellence. With continued cooperation from key aviation bodies, the airline aims to ensure its A350 fleet is back in full service as soon as possible.

Work continues for the fastest electric aircraft in the world

Rolls-Royce has completed its tests on groundbreaking technology that will power the world's fastest fully electric aircraft. Tests on all technology to power the aircraft, including the 500-horsepower electric powertrain that could break the world-wide speed record, and the battery that can power 250 homes, were carried out on a full-scale aircraft replica called 'ionBird'.

The aircraft in question is part of the Rolls-Royce program called 'Accelerating the Electrification of Flight' or ACCEL for short. The ACCEL project team consists of one of the main partners, electric motor and controller manufacturer YASA, and an aviation initiative named Electroflight. The project team continues its technology development efforts in compliance with the UK Government's social distance and other health regulations. The developed systems will soon be integrated into the aircraft named 'Spirit of Innovation'. In aviation, iron-bird (iron-bird) has been used for many years to test pre-flight propulsion systems, but this time Rolls-Royce named the aircraft body 'ionBird', based on the zero carbon emission energy source that will power the aircraft.

UK Trade and Industry Minister Nadhim Zahawi said: “In the future, transportation will be done with clean electricity sources in all means of transport from trains to planes. In this context, companies such as Rolls-Royce help us to achieve our net zero carbon emission targets by developing appropriate technologies. The completion of the ground tests under the ACCEL project, which is also supported by our government, is not only a step towards an exciting world record initiative, but also a move towards the development of fully electric and hybrid-electric aircraft that will one day carry large numbers of passengers around the world. ”

Propeller speed of about 2,400 revolutions per minute

Each of the system components was tested by the project team, including:

The propeller was operated at full speed (approximately 2,400 rpm) using the most powerful battery pack ever assembled for an aircraft propulsion system. While operating at full capacity during the flight test phase, it will activate the aircraft with a thrust of over 482.8032 km / h (300mph) and set a new world record speed in electric flights. There are over 6,000 cells in the battery to ensure maximum safety, minimum weight and full thermal protection.

Since January, Rolls-Royce's engineering team and test pilots have been working hard to optimize the system and develop electric flight operating procedures.

In order to improve performance in every possible way, gigabytes of data were created for each hour of operation analyzed by the project team.

“Rolls-Royce is committed to leading the way in achieving the net zero carbon emission target by 2050,” said Rob Watson, Director of Rolls-Royce Electric Systems. The completion of ground tests within the framework of the ACCEL project, besides being a very important achievement for the project team, is another critical step towards breaking the world record. This project also helps us to maintain our leadership in developing Rolls-Royce's capabilities and ensuring flight electrification, which is an important part of its sustainability strategy. ”

Bremont will act as the official timing partner in the all-electric speed record initiative. The British luxury watch brand designed the cockpit, which will have a stopwatch, while also producing canopy drop parts at its production center in Henley-on-Thames.

The first flight of the plane is planned for a later date this year. It is aimed to break the full electric flight record at the beginning of next year. Half of the project funding is provided by the Aerospace Technology Institute (ATI), in partnership with the government's Department for Business, Energy & Industrial Strategy and Innovate UK Council.

Mark Scully, Head of Advanced Systems & Propulsion Systems at the Institute of Aviation Technology, said: “Achieving such a milestone is of paramount importance. The ACCEL team pioneers the integration of the high-performance battery, engine and propulsion elements required to obtain an electric propulsion system within the framework of an ambitious flight test program. These technologies and the system integration required to use them have great potential for sustainable aviation in the future and therefore ATI is proud to support this project. ”
