A380, Airbus şirketinin yeni bayraktar uçağı (flagship) olup, geniş govde uçak sektöründe azami 853 yolcu taşıma kapasitesi ile yeni bir sınıf oluşturur. Projenin ortaya çıkışı, geliştirilmesi ve üretim safhalarında Airbus A3XXX kodu altında sürülmüştür.Tabiki Airbus ı bu  uçağı ürettirmeye çeken sebepler küreselleşme ve ekonomik sebeplerden ötürü olmuştur.Amaçlardan biri;tek seferde tek uçakla en fazla yolcuyu taşımak,buna bağlı olarak km başına pilot ve diğer işçilik giderlerini en aşağıya nasıl çekebilirim düşüncesi olmuştur.Şirket verilerine göre,bu uçağın diğer aynı sınıf kalitede uçak sınıfına göre işletim giderlerinin %15 daha az olmasıdır.Uçağın boş ağırlığını düşürmek için sandwich şeklinde üretişlmiştir.motorlar olarak diğer uçaklara göre daha sessiz oldugu düşünülmüştür.Motorları Rolly Royce firması trent 900 dur ve diğer sivil turbofan  motorlara göre engüçlü motorlardır. İç pervane çapı 2,95 metredir ve saniyede 1,5 ton hava çekemektedir.. Müşterilerin isteği üzerine Rolls-Royce motorları yanında, Engine Alliance (Pratt & Whitney ve General Electric) adlı şirketin ortak ürettikleri GP7200 motoru da kullanılabilir.Airbus şirketi bu uçağın gelişimi AR-GE için 12 milyar avro masraf etmiştir. Bir başka özelliği ise, diğer 4 motorlu uçaklarda, genelde her dört motorda thrust reverser (itici güç ters çevirici, uçakların inişte güçlü şekilde fren yapmasını sağlar) mevcut iken, A380´de sadece gövdenin hemen yanında bulunan sağlı-sollu en yakın motorda kullanılmasıdır. Nedeni ise, uçağın olağanüstü kanat uzunluğudur. Dünyada bulunan iniş pistlerinin büyük bir oranı sadece 45 ile 60 metre arasındadır. Pistlerin sağ ve sollarında genelde çimen veya kum alan bulunur. A380´in 2 dış motorları bu cim ve kum alanların üzerinde bulunacağı için, inişte hız kesme esnasında, bu dış motorların thrust reverser kullanımında kum ve çim parçalarını motorun içine çekip böylece motorda hasara sürükleyeceği korkusudur. Diğer başka nedeni ise, dünya genelinde çoğu havaalanlarının altyapıları, Boeing 747 tipi uçağa göre geçmişte tasarlanıp ve genişletilmesidir. Bu noktada hem Airbus hem de havaalanları işleticilerine, genişletilmede mümkün mertebe fazla finansal koşullar çıkarmamaktır.
Boeing tarafından ise uçağı %50 kompozit materyalden üretilmiş ve %20 yakıt tasarrufu sağlanmıştır.Bu taraftan bakıldığında Airbus mağlup olmuş gibi görünmüştür. Tabiki bu mağlupluktan iki ezeli rekabet birbirlerine göre her zaman yenilgi ve mağlubiyet noktaları olmuş birinin yuzde 5 lik yakıt tasarrufuna bakarak bu yorumu yapmak tabiî ki gereksiz olur.Biz sadece genel nıoktalardan hareketle bunu söylemekteyiz.787 Dreamliner, gövdesi ve kanatları dahil, ağırlıklı olarak fiber karbon kompozitlerinden üretilen ilk uçak.
