Why Richard Branson Started Airlines!

Thirty years ago, Richard Branson started Virgin Atlantic. But what made him decide to go into the travel business in the first place?

As he reveals in a new film put together by HP Matter, it all came after getting stuck in Puerto Rico while trying to get to the British Virgin Islands. 

“They didn’t have enough passengers to warrant the flight, so they cancelled the flight” he explains.

“I had a beautiful lady waiting for me in BVI and I hired a plane and borrowed a blackboard and as a joke I wrote Virgin Airlines on the top of the blackboard, $39 one way to BVI. I went out round all the passengers who had been bumped and I filled up my first plane.”

After that, Richard decided that he was fed up with airlines that didn’t care about their passengers and he wanted to do something about it. A phone call to Boeing to find out if they had any 747s for sale and an airline was born.

“We just made it that much more special than all the other airlines we were competing with,” Richard says. 

And that’s still true today. Where some airlines might have you in a cramped seat for hours during your flight, Virgin airlines offer a much more comfortable journey, with inflight entertainment as standard. Virgin Atlantic were actually the first to offer individual TV screens and a choice of channels to passengers in all classes in 1991.

Despite originally being in the entertainment industry, it certainly seems that Richard was always destined to go into aviation. His mum, Eve, was a stewardess in the 1940s, and his uncle flew spitfires in World War II - and survived being shot down.

Okul müdürü bir gün onu odasına çağırıp, “Ya hapishaneye gireceksin ya da milyon dolarların olacak” demiş. 15 yaşında okulu bırakmış; yine de “Üniversiteye gitmiş olmayı her şeyden çok isterdim” diyor. 60’lı yılların sonunda dünyaca konuşulacak işini kurdu ve Virgin Records isimli müzik yapım şirketini sahneye sürdü. SEX PISTOLS’LA ANLAŞTI Virgin Records’un ekonomik olarak sıkıntıda olduğu bir dönemde Mike Oldfield’ın Tubular Bells isimli albümü Virgin Records imzasıyla çıktı. Branson’ın sonraki adımı ise dönemin en popüler grubu Sex Pistols’la anlaşmak oldu. İşleri iyi gidince Avrupa’nın düşük ücretli hava yolu şirketlerinden olan Euro Belgian Airlines’ı satın aldı. Forbes’a göre 5.6 milyar dolarlık servetiyle dünyayı parmağında oynatan bu adam hayattan keyif almanın servetle bir ilişkisi olmadığının da farkında. Branson, “Saçma yatlar ve büyük özel jetler, limuzinler hayattan daha fazla keyif almanızı sağlamaz. Bu paralar Afrika’ya harcansa çok daha yararlı olurdu” diyor. İstikbal göklerde Özel hayatında dengeli bir adam olarak bilinen Branson’ın iki kızı bir oğlu var. 1989 yılından beri ikinci eşi Joan Templeman’la evli. Branson hayatındaki pek çok şeyi başardı. Şimdi önündeki en büyük hedef uzaya çıkmak. Hedefi 2014 yılı içinde uzay turizmini başlatmaktı. Fakat tarih biraz daha ileri atacak gibi gözüküyor

Virgin Racing Team

We’re incredibly excited about our new adventure into Formula E withVirgin Racing. I thought it was time to introduce the team’s Reserve Driver – yours truly!

I’m listed as the Reserve Driver, and I assure you I will be very reserved indeed. I’ve always loved a challenge, but I’m not sure my driving is up to scratch to take on the pros of Formula E.

Anyway, I’m sure newly announced team drivers Jaime Alguersuari and Sam Birdwill be a great job and, with some good luck, we could be celebrating at the end of the season.

There is a lot to be excited about in Formula E. Showcasing electric car technology on a thrilling global scale could have huge benefits in the future.

Plus, the fact the races are going to take place right in the middle of major cities around the world will be tremendous for fans.

The Championship begins on September 13th 2014 in Beijing. I can’t wait for us to get on the track (though I may let Jaime and Sam do the driving…)
