Latvia-based airline airBaltic is preparing to cut between 500 and 700 jobs as part of a major restructuring plan focused on improving its financial stability.
The airline, which employs around 3,000 people, said the potential job losses could affect employees in Riga, Vilnius and Tallinn. Final numbers have not yet been decided and will depend partly on discussions with unions.
As part of its new strategy, airBaltic plans to make its network more Riga-focused and reduce its Airbus A220-300 fleet from 54 aircraft to 36 by the end of 2026. The airline expects to gradually increase the fleet to around 40 aircraft by 2031.
Reduced working schedules are also being considered, particularly for pilots and cabin crew.
The restructuring comes as airBaltic continues its Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection process, which began in the United States in September 2026. The airline has said that its restructuring process will not stop normal flight operations, ticket sales or customer services.
The planned layoffs and fleet reduction represent a major step in airBaltic's efforts to reduce costs, manage its debt and build a more financially sustainable future.
